Book : Alienated Minority
The Jews of Medieval Latin Europe
Kenneth R. Stow
Harvard, 1992
In the 13th century, the Medieval Kingdom is seen through the metaphor of the body. “Membership in such a body was obviously limited”. Those who would deform or corrupt it were not welcome.” (p; 283).

Synagoga is attested in Middle Age in Strasbourg both as an architecure than a teaching.
- in 1292, the Domkapitel sells a house at the border of the synagoga Judeorum (p. 128)
- the community’s court, the Kahal, is described in documents as “universitas Judeorum Argentinensium” or “Universitas...

Hebrew Union College Annual Supplements; Vol. 4; 8vo; [9], 89 pages; 5 facsimile plates, bibliography, index.
Describes Jewish attitudes toward the popes, not the contrary.
Lay piety was independant from ecclesiastical controls.
Popes abandonned their ideal and made their peace with political realism.

Book : Synagoge und Kirche im Mittelalter
von Wolfgang SEIFERTH
Kösel Verlag München, 1964
Language : German. 246 pages, illustrations.
A very good book with precise references and chronology. Structured thought.
Book : Jean Gimpel, les bâtisseurs de cathédrales.
Seuil, 1958.
A good explanation about the free masons.
There were three sort of stone workers in the Middle Age :
- the hard hewers (carving petra dura, extremely hard stone)
- the rough masons (carving roughly the stone).
- the freestone masons (carving figures in chalky limestone)
The freestone masons were furtherly named “freemasons” (contraction of the 2 words).
A new excellent book...
Die Juden in der Kunst Europas (Ein Bildatlas), von Heinz Schreckenberg. Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Herder, 1996.
This is a big book (more than 400 pages) with a lot of illustrations, especially a serie about Ecclesia against Synagoga. Sculptures of many cathedrals and engravings.

Why is it strange?
The iconographic theme of Ecclesia and Synagoga looks strange at our eyes because :
- a dramatic subject is expressed with a sweet rendering.
- for us, novadays, church and synagogue are mainly buildings, not persons.
- In medieval times, churches, as buildings, took an increasing and huge place.
- there is no trace of a specific jewish architecture of medieval synagogues in Western...

As you can see in Wikipedia, Rudolf von Schlettsatdt is NOT YET in the list of the famous persons of the town.
Perhaps I’ll add him and write an article about him.

New book today
I got a new book today, posted from Austria. The title is : Historiae Memorabiles.
It’s from Rudolf von Schlettstadt (Sélestat, see photo).
This is a book written in the XIIIth (thirteens) century by a Dominican friar. He tells 56 incredible stories. The book is in Latine, the accompanying text is in German. Book : HISTORIAE MEMORABILIS, Rudolf von Schlettstadt, herausgegeben von Erich...
Book : HISTORIAE MEMORABILIS : Why I bought this...
The reasons why I selected this book are :
- the reference was given by Miri Rubin in an article “Imagining the Jew”, p. 190, in this book : IN AND OUT OF THE GHETTO, Jewish Gentile relation in late medieval and early modern Germany, R. Po-chia Hsia, Harmut Lehmann, Cambridge University Press, 1995, 2002.
